Dinan Hadyan is an artist from Bogor, Indonesia. Last year Dinan got her Bachelor of fine Arts Degree with a fascinating project called ‘Who is that person I see?’. In the project Dinan focusses on defining who she really is by portraying herself as someone else, in particular Korean pop star Kim Sung Kyu. Dinan on the project:
“The concept derived from my sense of fear towards myself that I have experienced a few years back. These are the struggles that I had with the ‘self’ that define who I really am, but I have yet to understand. I made this project through the belief that through other people, I can learn about myself. Coincides with my interest in the Korean pop culture, or better known as K-pop, I tried to convey the issues that I was having with myself through the subject Kim Sung Kyu, a singer and leader of the K-pop group INFINITE. In this project, I view Kim Sung Kyu as the other side of the mirror, a reflection of me, yet not quite the same.
I see him as the ‘ideal’. ‘Idol’ is a term being used used to describe these K-pop performers and that term is definitely self-explanatory as to how that person should present themselves to the public. This term is so strong, that sometime people tend to forget that these people are humans also and humans are far from ideal. He shares and suffer the same problem with most of the people in the world. With that idea in mind, through the process of making these artworks and further studying the subject, I have learned something about myself that has helped me accept my self a little bit more and put away my insecurities.”
The resulting watercolors are fascinating portraits that aren’t really self-portraits: portraits that reflect Dinan’s feeling and personality without revealing herself. Besides fascinating the paintings are an absolute sight for sore eyes, Dinan’s way with blending colors is amazing.
Thanks for reading. What do you think of Dinan’s work?
