Sorrowgrips is the creative name of Cecep Ryan Hakim, an artist living and working in Bandung, Indonesia. The illustrations, all in black and white and drawn with amazing detail, have dark, bleak mood and flirt with the occult.
Cecep’s subjects are often considered ‘too dark’ or even ‘evil’ by some, a judgement the artist isn’t too happy about. In his illustrations Cecep explores the lines between good and bad, to show what’s hidden in the darkness. By showing this to people he tries to change their perspective and to teach them to be less judgmental. I love the idea behind Cecep’s work. As a fan of dark art and underground music I’m often confronted with people’s prejudices. It’s not always easy to explain the beauty of the dark, but once people learn to see what’s out there they often discover a hidden world filled with kindness and beauty.
