Exploring the shadows with Mercedes Helnwein

mercedes-helnwein-intro
Mercedes Helnwein is an artist born in Vienna, Austria, who is currently living and working in Ireland and Los Angeles. Mercedes doesn’t like to be limited by technique when it comes to art: from drawing and painting to making films and writing books; it’s all on her CV. In this article I’d like to focus on her drawings and paintings: beautiful pieces in which she explores shadow-play with a vintage touch. Mercedes on her website:

“Film-noir is an influence. But oddly enough, not so much from actual films that have I’ve watched, but rather books I’ve gone through with film stills in them. I love the lighting and the incredible, almost ludicrous tension that exists in some of those scenes. Makes me wonder what the hell could be happening that would call for that much tension in a living-room with that kind of wallpaper. I love that way-out-of-proportion drama. Someone could be holding a stapler and it would make your heart go faster.”

I love the influence of film-noir lighting in Mercedes work, it gives her pieces an eerie, creepy vibe. You can find more of Mercedes’s work on her website, Facebook page and Instagram profile. Enjoy!
