Johan van Mullem is an artist living and working in Sint-Genesius-Rode, a small town in Flemish Brabant, Belgium. Johan graduated as an architect, but has always made time to exercise his biggest passion: art. Johan doesn’t limit himself to one technique, he varies in painting, drawing, etching and even sculpting. Today I want to introduce you to some of Johan’s paintings: haunting portraits that breathe a mysterious, dark vibe.
The use of light and shadow and color in a broad range of Johan’s work makes me think of the old Dutch masters like Vermeer, who painted stunning scenes lit only by candlelight. That darkness combines with the warped, distorted faces is a beautiful match, creating a variety of fascinating, dark paintings you’ll love.
Thanks for reading! What do you think of Johan’s work?
