Ingrid Baars is an artist from Dordrecht, The Netherlands, who currently lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium. Ingrid has been working on a series called l’Afrique! for several years now, and it keeps on getting better and better. Inspired by classic African art and culture Ingrid photographs editorial-like portraits and manipulates them into something more. From Ingrid’s bio:
“The amalgamation of classical African cult objects with fashion and real women enables the artist to transcend the natural and constitute an outer worldly realm that feels near but that is, upon closer inspection, a bit unsettling; the aestheticism and romanticism of beauty are imbued with a deeper sense of awareness, of consciousness. Armed with an innate aesthetic compass and quintessential style she evokes a phantasmagorical universe.”
I love how Ingrid creates all these pieces purely by herself: from the photographs that serve as a base layer to the editing that creates the supernatural, enchanting vibe her work breaths. By manipulating the pictures the already stunning models turn into something almost extraterrestrial: exotic Goddesses inspired by classic African art.
