Classic portraits with a modern touch by Rachel Bess

One thing I love about my country, the Netherlands, is its rich history in art. I love the Dutch Old Masters, and visit as many museums as possible to see their works of art in person. History is a fascinating subject, and those mysterious old paintings always had a major force of attraction to me. If you look at Arizona based artist Rachel Bess you might think she lived several centuries ago. The deep shading, scarce use of light and dramatic poses in her paintings shows similarities with Baroque masters like Vermeer and Rembrandt. Yet if you take a closer look you’ll notice the modern elements on the paintings, and see that Rachel is actually a contemporary artist. I really like this mesh-up of the classic and modern style, it gives the portraits characters and a sense of mystery. Enjoy!

  • I am drawn to the beautifully precise painting of faces, hands, skin. Rachel’s work is wonderful to follow over the years. One sees growth in subject matter, painting technique and painting each person as an individual.
