Colorful warped portraits with a sullen touch by Alexandra Garant

It seems that spring finally arrived in Europe! With that I mind I thought it would be nice to feature some more colorful work with you today – totally Bleaq-proof of course ;) Today’s featured artist is Alexandra Garant, an Quebec City born fine arts artist now residing in Toronto, Canada. Alex makes bright, colorful portraits in which she experiments with symmetry and mirroring and is influenced by early ink printing, vintage pop surrealism, baroque tapestries and retro kitsch. From Alex’s website:

Her most recent series metaphorically refers to carnival head-in-the-hole boards where the protagonists can step into a colorful plastinated reality, forgetting their current life burden.

I love this description since it spot-on describes the feeling I get when looking at these pieces. While bright and bold at first glance the warped, tortured faces of Alex’s subjects makes you wonder what’s going on, and give these pieces an sullen feel. Enjoy!
